Members of other unions will support teachers in rally Tuesday at noon

Comox Valley Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) members will stand beside teachers Tuesday.

Comox Valley Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) members will stand beside teachers Tuesday.According to Ian McLean, CUPE national representative in the Comox Valley, CUPE members plan to join local teachers in front of the School Board office at noon to show their opposition to Bill 22. That still-to-be-passed legislation would order striking teachers back to work, among other things."It's a regressive legislation for all workers," said McLean. "It takes on the entire labour movement and, most importantly, it takes on the right to free collective bargaining."McLean said he expects close to 200 members will march to Comox Valley MLA and past teacher Don McRae's office alongside teachers.School District 71 and North Island College support staff, and staff from the regional district, Town of Comox, City of Courtenay and Village of Cumberland will attend the protest. However, McLean mentioned it could be difficult for some members to come out because they have regular work hours.McLean also said he hopes 200 more CUPE members will take buses down to the legislature in Victoria for a large demonstration Tuesday."CUPE members — we work with the teachers every day — but in British Columbia, we have 80,000 CUPE members that, quite candidly, feel very strongly, and that's why we're standing up to oppose Bill 22," said McLean, adding that there's an 'if it can happen to them, it can happen to us' attitude amongst members."Absolutely — that is really the long and the short of it — that every CUPE member in this province, has or could have the ability to be legislated back to work."Comox Valley District Teachers' Association president Steve Stanley said teachers are outside of various schools in the Comox Valley today, but that they will amass during the demonstration at the school board office Tuesday and some will go to Victoria. The School District 71 board office is at 607 Cumberland Rd. in Courtenay.reporter@comoxvalleyrecord.com
