Mark Isfeld’s senior boys' soccer team came into provincials in Burnaby from Nov. 18 to 20, as the number one seed from the Island after winning the Island Championships for the first time in Isfeld boys' soccer history.
The boys got off to a great start, beating Nechako Valley 7-0, with a hat trick from Marcus Ciastkowski. In their second match, the boys fought hard to secure a 2-1 win against Langley Fundamental, with Parker Guille scoring the winning goal late.
On Day 2, the boys clinched first place in their pool with a 2-0 win against Windermere, which set them up for a semi-final match against Windsor Secondary from North Vancouver. Mark Isfeld went down 1-0 after the first half, but an amazing individual effort from Fisher Doyle tied the game a 1-1 early in the second half. It seemed momentum was on Isfeld’s side until Alex Boardman scored a beautiful goal in the 63rd minute.
Isfeld fell short with a final score of 3-1 for the eventual provincial champions Windsor. The loss set up a bronze medal game against Island rivals Brentwood, who had defeated Isfeld 2-1 the last time they met at North Islands. After a closely fought first half, Brentwood went up 1-0 in the 52nd minute. Isfeld came close to tying the game, hitting the post in the final minutes of the game, but they weren’t able to beat the Brentwood keeper.
With a 1-0 final Brentwood took home the bronze, while Mark Isfeld secured their best-ever finish at provincials for the boy's team at fourth place. On top of this, they also took home the Fair Play award for the tournament. The boys battled hard throughout the season, and should be proud to have had the most successful season in Mark Isfeld Senior boys soccer history.
