A 69-year-old man has died after a car crash Monday afternoon (Nov. 7) in Port Hardy at the Coal Harbour turnoff.

鈥淲e were called at 12:48 p.m. to assist ambulance,鈥� said Port Hardy RCMP Corporal Ryan Rooke. 鈥淭here was a truck on the highway and a small Toyota Echo was attempting to cross the highway going from Coal Harbour Road to Hardy Bay Road鈥� and was t-boned by the truck鈥� Unfortunately the driver of the car passed away in the hospital - there were minor injuries to the other driver, who is cooperating.鈥�

No alcohol, drugs, or criminality is suspected to have caused the incident, and while there were conflicting witness statements as to whether the driver of the small car rolled through the stop sign without looking, Rooke confirmed the driver 鈥渟houldn鈥檛 have been going through the intersection when he did.鈥�

The road was shutdown and detoured into town for five hours while the RCMP completed its investigation.

The RCMP won鈥檛 be releasing the deceased鈥檚 name.
