On Oct. 4, L’Arche Comox Valley kicked-off its campaign to raise $3.5 million to construct more safe, affordable housing for people with developmental disabilities.
The event at Native Sons Hall drew a passionate crowd to discuss the critical need in the community.
The event featured award-winning broadcaster Tamara Taggart. An activist and community leader, Taggart shared her story of raising and advocating for her son Beckett who has Down’s Syndrome.
“When L’Arche reached out to me about the event it was an immediate yes”, said Taggart. “I’m really interested in L’Arche and in what everyone is doing in the Comox Valley to support people living with disabilities.
“We don’t all get to meet face-to-face with adults who are living with an intellectual disability and find out what it’s like for them. But it’s the next chapter of my son’s life and others, and I want to make sure we’re ready for it.”
Peter Gibson, capital campaign chair for The Anchorage attended the event and noted the event was an inspiring evening.
“... There’s clearly a growing interest in how we support community members with developmental disabilities, so they can give back to the community and live their fullest life.”
L'Arche is recognized for its success in building communities and accommodations for people with diverse abilities in the Comox Valley. The Anchorage is L’Arche Comox Valley’s third planned residence.
