L’Arche Comox Valley – a registered charity dedicated to providing living support and community for adults with developmental disabilities – is announcing the kick-off of its fundraising campaign with an event on Oct. 4 at the Native Sons Hall.

The event marks the beginning of an ambitious effort to raise $3.5 million to create independence and community for people with developmental disabilities. All proceeds from the event will directly benefit the construction of the first phase of The Anchorage â€“seven suites of affordable and safe housing with a common amenity space. Construction will include the undergrounds and utilities for a second phase of housing with an additional eight suites on the same property.

The kick-off event will feature award-winning Tamara Taggart â€“ a community leader, activist, veteran broadcaster, cancer survivor and mother. With a broadcasting career spanning 28 years in television, radio, and digital media, Taggart has also focused two decades of volunteer efforts on health care and the well-being of children and people with disabilities.

She is a community leader who advocates for others and raises much-needed funds for many important causes, contributing thousands of hours and serving as a director of several non-profit organizations. Taggart currently hosts the podcast Telus Talks with Tamara Taggart and is the volunteer president of Down Syndrome BC.

The event is set from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.; tickets are available at L'Arche Comox Valley, Blue Heron Books and Laughing Oyster Book Shop.
