Residents are encouraged to shut off lights in support of Earth Hour this Saturday.
As of 8:30 p.m., non-essential lights, computers and electrical equipment can be turned off as a symbolic show of support for action on climate change.
"This event aligns with goals set out in the sustainability strategy for the Comox Valley and is an opportunity to be recognized by other communities when it comes to our climate-change commitments," said Michael Zbarsky, CVRD manager of transit and sustainability.
“By participating in this event it serves as a reminder that the small energy conservation actions we make in our daily lives will add up to make a big difference for Comox Valley, for the province and for our country."
Earth Hour started in 2007 in Sydney, Australia where 2.2 million people individuals and more than 2,000 businesses turned off lights for one hour to take a stand against climate change. In 2010, upwards of 10 million Canadians from all provinces and territories turned out lights in more than 300 cities and towns.
This year’s event continues with a call to action to every individual, business and community throughout the world to take responsibility, get involved and lead the global journey to a sustainable future.
