Following the purchase of Super 8 by BC Housing last month, residents from the Travelodge will slowly start transitioning to their new homes this month.

However, it is a different story for former employees of the hotel who were laid off on June 10.

According to a Super 8 receptionist contacted last week, the transition resulted in a job loss of around 10 employees.

Comox Valley Transition Society (CVTS) executive director Heather Ney, who oversees the transition, has taken actions to address the situation. She confirmed that all Super 8 employees have been contacted and offered job opportunities at CVTS.

“They’ve all been provided with contact to our human resources and any job postings that we’ve had,” said Ney. “I’m not sure if anybody has actually applied for any of our vacancies, but we’re open to that.”

Ney mentioned that housekeeping and receptionist positions will no longer be required since tenants of the Super 8 will be doing their own laundry and taking care of their rooms.

Still, CVTS is currently looking to fill in three to four support worker job openings.

“The jobs are quite different but we’ve found that when we took over the Travelodge, we hired a couple of the folks that worked at the hotel and it has worked out really well.”

Those willing to apply would have to submit their resume to CVTS and undergo an interview process to demonstrate their ability to work with the population of the Super 8.

As for the rest of the team required to run this new operation, Ney mentioned that CVTS staff would be transferred gradually from Travelodge to the Super 8.

The Record has tried to reach out several times to former Super 8 employees but did not receive any response.
