Elements of improv, particularly with diverse musicians are set to come together to great music together on Aug. 29 at 40 Knots Winery for local jazz fans from the Georgia Straight Jazz Society.

L’Oiseau Noir, comprised of Joanna Finch and Miles Black, both accomplished musicians, make up the duo, however, they will also be joined by talented drummer James McRae.

A Vancouver Island resident, Finch’s silky, sultry voice with an incredible five-octave range has been compared to Sade, Diana Krall, even Joni Mitchell and Marlene Dietrich. An established recording as well as performing artist, Finch has produced four albums in folk, jazz, blues, Latin and experimental free jazz.

“I’m totally alive when I’m expressing my music in whatever form it takes – especially free jazz/improvisation,” she notes.  Her eclectic style has taken her to far-flung places such as Ecuador to perform with Jorje Triana’s Cuban Jazz band and back to Vancouver Island stages with Brodie Dawson. She formed a lasting relationship with Miles Black when he accompanied her on his debut album, In The Arms of Morpheus.

Black hails from Vancouver but is known across Canada and beyond as an exceptionally talented jazz pianist. He has worked with many well-known artists; Mark Murphy, Slide Hampton, George Coleman, Scott Hamilton, Dee Daniels, to name a few. Miles is often a ‘first call’ when musicians are seeking a top-notch professional enhancement to their projects as he also is an arranger, producer, composer, guitarist, vocalist, bassist, saxophonist, even a musical theatre director.

In addition to 40 Knots award-winning wines, beer and non-alcoholic beverages will be available as well as a food truck selling delicious savoury and sweet crepes. For more information about upcoming concerts, google “Georgia Straight Jazz Society” and select the calendar tab.

Downbeat for the Aug. 29 show is at 7 p.m. Admission is $25.00  ($20 for members)

40 Knots Winery is located at 2400 Anderton Road, Comox. Please follow the directions of the parking attendant when you arrive. Doors open at 6:00 p.m.
