Developing a downtown hotel, improving walking and biking connections and enhancing the marina are just a few ‘actions’ forming the core of a Comox Downtown Enhancement Action Plan.

The plan was presented to Comox council during the April 10 strategic planning committee and is a plan for strategic actions. The action plan sets priorities for the downtown area and was created through a variety of stakeholders, including town council, staff, the Downtown Business in Action and community workshop participants.

According to the report, Comox downtown vitalization has been one of the Town of Comox’s priorities and specified in the Strategic Plan since 2012.

Following meetings and workshops in late 2023, a list of nine big moves (actions) and nine strategies form the core of the plan; the actions are tasks in the short and medium term that create success and are opportunities to consider.

Of the larger actions is to create a greater downtown destination initiative, by better connecting and developing the marina and Comox Golf Course with the downtown. The action also includes the development of a hotel - the community’s number one priority, according to the plan.

Increasing the promotion of Comox as a destination and defining a parking strategy were also highlights of the action.

Additionally, another action includes a town square meeting place as a top priority, creating a place in the downtown for celebrations and festivals. The Comox Golf Course was discussed as more of a park asset for the greater community.

“There could be some short-to-medium opportunities that could take advantage of the golf course location in the centre of town and invite the public to enjoy the beautiful natural features (including) consider(ing) the development of a trail loop …consider(ing) a town park and parking lot at the south end of the golf course …(and) consider(ing) extending Buena Vista Avenue through the southern edge of the golf course to improve traffic movement downtown and to the centre,” reads some of the comments in the plan.
