A smoky haze will linger as summer heats up on Vancouver Island this week.

The BC Fire smoke map shows light particles, heavier at times, over the next two days, coinciding with summer daytime temperatures.

In Greater Victoria, temperatures Tuesday (July 4) are expected to hit 28 C with sun and cloud in the afternoon. Clouds will shift in and out across the south Island the next two days with daytime highs of 23 and 24 C right through to next week.

Just before 7 a.m. Tuesday, Nanaimo airport was the hot spot in B.C. at 20.8 C according to Environment Canada. That part of the Island is expected to hit a high this week of 32 C Wednesday.

While the haze is expected to linger, Environment Canada predicts a low risk of air quality issues even as 107 fires burn across B.C.

The provincial wildfire map showed 107 active wildfires of various stages and sizes Tuesday morning. There are seven on Vancouver Island including a fire spotted Sunday (July 2) near Muir Creek, west of Sooke. That half-hectare fire is deemed under control.

Up the coast, a 12-hectare fire east of Bamfield (south of Klanawa River), also discovered Sunday, remains out of control.

Created by the Weather Forecast Research Team at the University of British Columbia, the fire smoke map shows BlueSky Canada smoke and fire weather forecasts with support from multiple agencies.
