Victoria residents are once again being recognized for their generosity.
B.C.'s capital sits atop the list of GoFundMe's most generous communities.
"For the second year in a row, the most generous community is Victoria, where over 19,500 donors generously contributed in 2024. With a population of nearly 92,000, that results in a per capita donation rate of 21.3 per cent – that’s over one in five Victorians," according to a release from GoFundMe.
The rankings are based on the number of donors per capita made through the GoFundMe platform. North Vancouver finished second in the rankings, followed by St. John's Nfld., Vancouver and Milton, Ont.
“I am not surprised that Victorians are being recognized for their generosity. We appreciate how lucky we are to live in one of the most beautiful places in the world and we support organizations that work to enhance our community. Whether as generous donors or as volunteers, we give back,” said Sandra Hudson whose company handles public relations for several non-profit arts and culture organizations in Victoria.
“I’m sure that as we continue to recover from the pandemic, it has been difficult for many to continue to be as generous as in the past, however, I think that it speaks to the importance those in the Capital Region place on not-for-profit organizations and the work that they do to enhance our lives, that they are willing to increase their generosity.”
Victoria residents were also recognized for their generosity in a new ranking from CanadaHelps. Victoria was named the fifth most generous city in Canada, with 4.28 per cent of the population making donations in 2024.
“As we head into the end of the year, CanadaHelps is calling on all Canadians to give what they can this holiday season to support causes close to their hearts or make an impact in their local community, whether they choose to donate, volunteer, or engage in other forms of generosity,” said Duke Chang, president and chief executive officer of CanadaHelps, in a release.
CanadaHelps is the country's largest online platform for donating and fundraising. The rankings include the 200 most populated cities in Canada, with ratings based on CanadaHelps data on donations.
