Genders explored

North Island College is exploring gender identity this week with a film screening and seminar with Vancouver filmmaker Gwen Haworth.

North Island College (NIC) is presenting a screening of Haworth’s award-winning documentary She’s a Boy I Knew this Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the Stan Hagen Theatre at NIC’s Comox Valley Campus.

In She’s a Boy I Knew, Haworth tells her own story.

The film is not only an exploration of her process of transition from biological male to female, from Steven to Gwen, but it is also an emotionally charged account of the personal experiences, struggles and stakes that her two sisters, parents, friends and wife brought to Haworth’s transition.

Haworth will be present at the screening and will host a question and answer session after the film.

Viewers are also invited to attend a seminar entitled Media Portrayal of Transsexuals with Haworth the following day, beginning at 9 a.m. in Tyee 203, facilitated by NIC instructors Roger Albert and Laura Johnston.

For more information regarding the screening of She’s a Boy I Knew or the seminar, contact Roger Albert at 250-334-5030.
