Do you struggle to complete your taxes?
If you have a simple tax return and modest income, volunteers are ready to file your income tax return for free. Modest income is defined for people without dependents as a gross income below $35,000 and for couples or people with dependents as a gross household income below $52,500.
These free tax clinics are sponsored by the Comox Valley Lions Club. They will be held every Tuesday afternoon from 1 to 3 p.m., from March 4 until April 29 inclusive, at the Lions Den located in downtown Comox below the Pearl Ellis Gallery, at 1729 Comox Ave.
These free tax clinics serve a wide variety of clients including seniors, students, newcomers, Indigenous people, persons with disabilities, and persons who are receiving social assistance or who are housing insecure. In 2024, this team of volunteers filed more than 750 income tax returns for Comox Valley residents. Volunteers at the tax clinic will meet with the clients (first come first served), then prepare and file an income tax return for them on the spot, and provide a printed confirmation that Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) has received their return.
Alternately, clients can complete information and authorization forms that allow volunteers to prepare and file the return on their behalf – then they return a week later to retrieve their forms and their CRA filing confirmation. For people who may not have filed returns in several years, the volunteers can file returns from prior years to get them caught up.
People need to file their income tax returns on time, to ensure that they receive their full tax refunds, refundable credits and benefits to which they are entitled.
The volunteers are registered with the CRA’s Community Volunteer Income Tax Program. For more information on these free tax clinics, call the Lions Den in Comox on Tuesday afternoons at 250-339-6232.
For the health of the volunteers and the other clients, please do not attend a free tax clinic on a day when you are symptomatic with illness.
