A report of a natural gas leak in the kitchen of a seniors’ residence in Courtenay had a heavy first responder presence Thursday night (Jan.4) on Cliffe Avenue.

The Courtenay Fire Department, Comox Valley RCMP and BC Ambulance attended Ocean Front Village at 2900 Cliffe Ave. following a potential leak.

Comox Valley RCMP spokesperson Const. Monika Terragni confirmed police were called to assist around 9:15 p.m. with the initial concern that a large number of people would have to be evacuated, however, the fire department was able to quickly source the leak.

The building was not evacuated, and a service company was required to assist in finding the leak.

Ocean Front Village is a seniors’ lifestyle community that provides independent and assisted living options. It opened in summer 2022 with two buildings centred by an amenities portion and 85 private pay, independent living suites along with 120 government-funded long-term care beds and six hospice beds.
