About a year ago, fabric artist and former Courtenay resident Althea White approached Courtenay councillor Doug Hillian with a unique request. She was wondering if he could help her find a new home for her 145x152 cm handmade tapestry.
鈥�(White) wanted to donate it to the community and asked if I could help her find a suitable place,鈥� said Hillian. 鈥淪he thought perhaps in a civic building or something like that.鈥�
White and Hillian are reaching out to community organizations in the Valley to see if any of them would be interested in adorning their walls with this sizable handmade embroidery.
Titled The Moon at Sunrise, the artwork showcases the Comox Glacier, viewed from Courtenay鈥檚 Back Road area, with the moon setting and the sun rising. White drew inspiration from a photograph taken by Mary Jean Edwards.
Although the artist currently resides in Victoria, White remains attached to the region she once called home.
鈥淚t is quite a nice piece and an interesting goodwill gesture,鈥� said Hillian. 鈥淪he definitely felt that it should be in the Valley.鈥�
