Courtenay welcomes back ‘the toughest 2 minutes in sports’

Dozens of firefighters competed in the B.C. FireFit Regional Championships from May 25 to 26

The FireFit Championships tour the country every year to test the skills of seasoned firefighters and rookies in a challenging race strewn with numerous challenges.

Stopping for another year in Courtenay, the gruelling two-day event was held on 4th Street between Cliffe and Duncan Avenues on May 25 and 26.

Emulating various real-life emergencies, competitors had to navigate their way through a series of obstacles, all while wearing their work gear, and performing in teams or alone.

Among their tasks, the first responders had to run up several flights of stairs, drag a 175-pound dummy for more than 30 metres, and skillfully use a fire hose. All this had to be performed in the quickest time.

Over the years, the competition has earned the reputation of being “the toughest two minutes in sports.”

Dozens of firefighters, from B.C. and beyond, participated in this year’s competition which drew a cheerful crowd on both days.
