You don’t have to be an early bird to catch Comox’s Bird Friendly Team hosting World Migratory Bird Day on May 11.

This year’s theme is ‘protect insects to protect birds,’ with the event set from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the MARS Wildlife Visitors Centre, 1331 Williams Beach Rd. in Merville.

The Bird Friendly Team are residents of the Comox Valley working to promote native plant gardening, ecosystem restoration and wildlife education in support of local bird populations.

Joining the Bird Friendly Team for this event is a local member of the Native Bee Society of BC who will be bringing information on ‘planting for pollinators’ with informative handouts and fun bee postcards.

Nature Canada () has created a Bird Friendly Certification process to assist Canadian towns and cities to become bird-friendly. From Toronto to Lion’s Bay B.C., communities are becoming certified as bird-friendly. It is the goal of the Comox Bird Friendly Team to work with the Town of Comox to become certified through three categories:

· Threat Reduction

· Habitat Protection, Restoration and Climate Resiliency

· Community Outreach/Education.

To achieve our goals, we are aligning with local organizations such as the Comox Valley Nature Society, Kitty Cat Pals, and MARS Wildlife Rescue Society. Comox Town Couns. Jenn Meilleur and Jonathan Kerr have offered their enthusiastic support for the Bird Friendly Certification process.

In order to learn more, meet the team, and join in saving bird lives, visit the MARS Visitor Centre on May 11.
