The Comox Valley soccer community is one step closer to getting a second all-weather pitch.

The proposed second Vanier pitch was one of two projects (sewer extension project was the other) approved to split the remaining $1,617,000 from the Growing Communities Funds (GCF).

At the Dec. 5 Comox Valley Regional District (CVRD) board meeting, the remaining funds were allocated to two projects that build infrastructure and amenities necessary to support growing communities. The funds are allocated as follows:

• $808,500 to the new artificial turf field as described by the Comox Valley Recreation Commission;

• $808,500 to the Sewer Extension South project.

“These two projects are key pieces to the growth and sustainability of the Comox Valley,” said CVRD board chair Will Cole-Hamilton. “While there a number of projects ongoing throughout the community that deserve financial attention, this funding follows the board’s key strategic drivers and priorities while meeting the acceptance requirements of the grant. We look forward to seeing their impact for years to come.”

The total allocated funds from the GCF was $4,497,000.

The CVRD had previously approved the following allocation of funds:

• Denman Island Fire Hall Replacement Project (2025) $850,000;

• Mount Washington Fire Hall Project (2023) $600,000;

• Union Bay Fire Hall Replacement Project (2024) $1,195,000;

• Denman Island Cross Trail (2024) $25,000;

• Goose Spit Trail (2024) $90,000.
