On June 22, the Rotary Club of Comox presented the 2016-17 Community Paul Harris Fellow awards to three community leaders. Harris, the founder of Rotary, established the first club in 1905 with a true commitment and passion for service.

The special community members who received the awards exemplify the Rotary motto of ‘Service Above Self.’ They include Norm Carruthers, president of the Comox Valley Community Foundation; Roger McKinnon, founder of the Comox Valley Mayors Golf Tournament and the Vancouver Island Top 20 Under 40; and Steven Smith, co-founder of the Strathcona Park Wilderness Centre.

Service has been the main goal of the Rotary Foundation, which was founded in 1917. Over the last 100 years, the foundation has developed six areas of interest in providing service throughout the world. One of those areas is economic and community development. This year’s recipients have truly demonstrated the generous sharing of their talents to enhance economic and community development.
