The Town of Comox is announcing the launch of the Snow Angels program this winter.

The pilot program will pair good-hearted neighbours with seniors and residents with disabilities who need assistance clearing snow and ice from their sidewalks.

“With snow falling earlier, we aim to support our community in assisting others who find it challenging or are unable to clear their sidewalks. We see folks out doing this as an act of kindness already,” said Comox Mayor, Nicole Minions.

“Comox is known for helping out their neighbours. Every winter, you can see people stepping up to clear a sidewalk or an entire street in some cases. This program formalizes a process in matching up the need with Snow Angels in our community.”

In the first year of launching this program, Town of Comox staff recognizes the number of residents requiring assistance may surpass the number of Snow Angels who sign up. It will take some time for messaging to get out into the community, so spreading the word through community-based organizations, youth sports leagues, high-school students looking for community support hours, or faith groups will assist with people stepping forward.

There are greater community benefits to clearing sidewalks in the winter, as the Snow Angels program will make sidewalks safer for those who use them regularly, like postal carriers, emergency personnel, children walking to school, and even for the everyday walker.

For those interested in applying to be a Snow Angel or those needing assistance with the clearing of their sidewalks, the town’s website outlines the eligibility criteria, information packages, frequently asked questions and sign-up forms.
