Campfires are banned in the Comox Valley Regional District effective at noon on July 12.

The Comox Valley Regional District is joining the province in issuing a campfire ban effective Friday, July 12 at noon.

The ban was initially issued by BC Wildfire Service covering the entire province.

“The Comox Valley continues to experience hot and dry conditions and it’s important to do our part in reducing that risk,” explains Bruce Green, CVRD Regional Rural Fire Chief. “The CVRD and our regional partners are following the direction of BC Wildfire Service with a zero tolerance for campfires and open fires of any kind.”

The prohibition covers the entire jurisdiction of the ̨MM Fire Centre, including all provincial parks, crown land, and private property.

To further reduce wildfire risk in the Comox Valley, a smoking ban has been issued in all CVRD parks. Also, the beach fires program has been suspended until further notice and fire rings will be removed from designated parks.

The campfire prohibition does not apply to cooking stoves that use gas, propane or briquettes, or portable campfire devices that use briquettes, liquid, or gaseous fuel, provided they are CSA or ULC approved, and the height of the flame is less than 15 centimetres.

The following area fire departments are involved in the campfire ban:

- Merville Fire Department

- Mount Washington Fire Department
