When someone mentions boat racing, one might think of the Swiftsure International Yacht Race or Seafair on Lake Washington, but at Saratoga Speedway, there is a completely different type of land-based boat racing happening on Saturday, June 22.

“It’s a land-based form of boating torture,” said Saratoga Speedway public relations director Cole Sorenson.

This one-of-a-kind race involves multiple Sunwest RV Centre Crash-to-Pass cars and trucks towing unwanted boats behind them at speed. The end goal is “to destroy as much of your competitor's boat as possible by the end of the allotted time,” said Sorenson.

This is accomplished by ramming, pit maneuvering and in extreme cases driving through boats at speeds approaching 80 km/h.

Erik Jessen is a regular Saratoga Speedway Crash-to-Pass competitor and will be competing in this weekend’s boat racing action.

“If you want to see an all-out war on the track with all the hitting and spinning boats being thrown around, Saratoga is the place to be this weekend,” said Jessen who has been racing for six years now.

“It’s hard because we are doing this on a wet track,” he added. “It’s like trying to drive your daily driver on ice with a boat attached to it.”

Fans are encouraged to buy tickets online at saratogaracing.ca to avoid long waits. Also in action will be the Ace Brewing Bombers and the Kyte Delivery Service A and B Class Hornets.
