As of Friday, July 21, 2017 beach fires at the Comox Valley Regional District’s (CVRD) Goose Spit Park are banned until further notice, due to fire conditions around the province and the extreme fire rating here in the region.
Although there is some precipitation now and in the forecast, the hot and dry weather is expected to return later in the weekend.
“Given the conditions around the province, which are extraordinary circumstances, the CVRD and the Comox Fire Chief have decided to implement a fire ban at Goose Spit Park,” said Parks Manager Doug DeMarzo. “We thank the public for their understanding and co-operation.”
A campfire ban in the region has been in place since July 6, 2017 and a smoking ban is also in effect at all CVRD parks.
Although key personnel and equipment have been deployed to the BC interior, sufficient firefighters and equipment remain in the region to maintain a first-response capability locally, as was required with the recent Curtis Road brushfire in Comox.
