German shepherd puppies were stolen from a Nanaimo residence under the cover of darkness earlier this week.

According to a Nanaimo RCMP press release, 10 eight-week-old puppies were reported stolen from a kennel on Black Diamond Drive in Nanaimo on Monday, June 26, at approximately 3 a.m., when the daughter of the owner was awoken by noise coming from the backyard.

When she went onto the deck to investigate, she saw several unknown people fleeing the residence with the puppies and screamed. The people were described as wearing tuques and hoodies, the release stated, and they got into a dark-coloured SUV and were seen heading driving toward Jingle Pot Road.

Five of the pups have since been found and returned, said police, but help is needed recovering the remaining five.

“The owner has reached out to various animal care groups and the community at large, and all have been very helpful in assisting the police with their investigation,” said reserve Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesperson, in the press release.

Anyone with information on the puppies is asked to call Nanaimo RCMP non-emergency line at 250-754-2345, citing file No. 2023-21602.
