While far from his first foray into returning a camera found while diving, Ken Kieley is impressed with his first dip into internet waters to reunify a GoPro camera with its owner.
The Metchosin resident and avid diver was in the waters off Ogden Point with his wife Jan. 26 when he spotted a wayward GoPro.
On the hunt for underwater wildlife, he spotted the camera on the seabed, grabbed it, took it home and took it apart.
Finding some footage on the SD card, he took to social media.
He posted images Sunday night, and by Monday night the owner’s mom contacted him. The owner himself reached out not much later.
“It was crazy, I totally didn’t expect the response that we got. And I didn’t expect so many people to be vested in finding the owner of this camera,” he said.
More than 1,000 people have interacted with the post that included still shots to help identify the owner.
The owner sent pictures of a tattoo and toque visible in the videos to prove ownership and the pair met up for a quick handoff at 6 Mile Pub on Tuesday.
The full turnaround was three days from finding to returning it.
Knowing the camera was likely ruined, the owner seemed excited to get the SD card, which held videos dating back to 2016.
Kieley saw the entire loss on video as one of the last shows him flipping over while snorkelling, and the camera floating down above him.
“He said he looked for it for about 15 minutes and then got too cold,” Kieley said.
The two-day social media turnaround is impressive, but the couple has had success before. They found a camera while diving off Saxe Point six months ago and through the staff at Wilson’s Diving, got it back to its rightful owner within a couple of days.
