By 2030, almost a quarter of the Canadian population will be over 65. One of the key questions seniors and their families will contend with is deciding how and where to enjoy their retirement.

For many, staying in the home and community they love can be a crucial factor in their health and happiness, and is dedicated to making that possible.

By offering a wide range of products specifically designed to improve safety and mobility, including grab bars, bathroom aids, bedroom safety supplies, walkers, canes and wheelchairs, the Comox team helps local seniors live comfortably and independently.

These items are essential for seniors dealing with stability issues and can make everyday activities more manageable. “Having aids around for seniors to get out of bed, get out of the bathtub, really helps improve that stability,” explains Medicine Shoppe co-owner Darryl Hunt.

In addition to products, the company provides free in-home safety assessments. Often, these evaluations are triggered by a fall or by concerned family members visiting elderly loved ones and noticing their struggles.

During an assessment, team members examine various areas of the home, including bathrooms, kitchens and living rooms, and suggest simple changes such as removing throw rugs or adding handrails. “It’s usually the biggest trigger when they've fallen in their house or their children visit and notice how mom and dad can’t do things anymore,” Hunt says.

Demand for these services and products is growing, he adds. “It’s almost daily that someone comes in looking for this kind of help simply because something has happened,” Hunt says.

Beyond safety equipment, the store also carries a range of braces for wrists, knees, shoulders and other areas that may need support due to injuries or conditions like carpal tunnel.
