“Back in 2002 when I started, my dump truck was pretty much my office,” Rob Hendrickson says with a laugh.
Hard to picture that now with the going concern that is today!
Welcoming gardeners and homeowners to the Comox Road site, the locally owned and operated business has grown considerably as customers share word about the range of products available.
“We built up a reputation for quality products and service, and that’s really spurred the growth we’ve seen,” Hendrickson says. “We pride ourselves on supplying the finest soils, mulches, composts and more to help our customers create a home and garden they love,” says Hendrickson, whose team provides quality, Island-sourced landscaping products throughout the Comox Valley.
With a solid foundation the key to any successful garden, it’s no wonder the site was buzzing this spring.
As COVID-19 had even non-gardeners thinking about how they could elevate their space, the Black Gold team was busy answering questions, ensuring the right amount of the right product was selected and that customers gave their project the best start possible.
Come summer, mulches can help keep water in and weeds down, or browse options for their driveways, pathways and other projects.
The enthusiasm customers show for their projects is part of what makes dishing the dirt so rewarding: “Most people are pretty excited to get their product and get started, so it’s a pretty great business that way,” Hendrickson says.
Serve yourself or opt for delivery
Those needing only a small amount of soil, mulch or stone are welcome to come pick up product in 5-gallon buckets. A half-yard and yard scoop is also available for those with a truck.
Similar flexibility is available for delivery, ranging from small and medium truckloads to a larger vehicle that delivers up to 12 yards of soil or 15 yards of mulch, Hendrickson says.
While the – where you can pick up grass seed and landscape cloth – was closed temporarily, it’s back up and serving customers needing those extras.
Sharing the Shop Local experience
While the Black Gold team was fortunate to be busy during COVID, the experience for others in the Valley has underscored the importance of supporting local businesses. To do his part, after asking customers for their recommendations, Hendrickson is purchasing 10 – $100 gift certificates from local businesses to award to lucky recipients in a series of prize draws. “We were lucky because we stayed busy, but we need to focus on local,” he says.
