Whether you drive a new or used car, Comox Valley’s Galaxy Motors  shares their five-point guide to help vehicle owners make informed choices.

Winter is on its way and for Comox Valley drivers, that means cold weather, rain, ice and yes, snow.

Preparing your vehicle for winter is essential for safe driving and preserving your car’s longevity. Whether you drive a new or used car,  shares their five-point guide to help vehicle owners make informed choices.

  1. Check your battery – Cooler temperatures can reduce your car battery’s efficiency, making it harder to start your vehicle. Have your battery tested at a local service shop to ensure it’s holding a proper charge. Check for corrosion on the terminals and ensure all connections are secure. If your battery is over three years old, it may be time for a replacement to avoid getting stranded on a frosty morning.
  2. Swap to winter tires – The Comox Valley’s mix of rain, ice and snow calls for proper tire care. Winter tires are designed to grip wet and icy roads, significantly improving safety. Even if snow is rare, temperatures below 7°C harden all-season tires, reducing traction. Ensure your tires are properly inflated and have adequate tread depth – at least 3.5 mm for winter driving.
  3. Monitor fluid levels – Winter driving places extra demands on your vehicle’s systems. Check and top up vital fluids, including engine oil, coolant and windshield washer fluid. Switch to a winter-grade washer fluid to prevent freezing and ensure your visibility remains clear during heavy rains or sleet.
  4. Inspect your wipers – Windshield wipers are often overlooked but are critical for winter safety. Replace old or streaking wipers with heavy-duty ones designed for cold weather. Don’t forget to check your defroster and heater to keep your windshield free of fog and ice.
  5. Stock an emergency kit – Even with proper preparation, unexpected situations can occur. Keep an emergency kit in your car with essentials such as a flashlight, jumper cables, blanket, first aid kit, and non-perishable snacks. For Comox Valley drivers, adding a rain poncho and an ice scraper can be particularly helpful.

Galaxy Motors has emergency kits available in their Service Department for only $49.95!

Winter readiness not only ensures your vehicle operates efficiently but also keeps you and your loved ones safe on the road. Visit a trusted mechanic in the Comox Valley to help you with these tasks and keep your car running smoothly all season long.

No matter what roads you find yourself on, it’s essential to ensure your vehicle meets all your driving and safety requirements. The Galaxy Motors team is eager to help you stay safe and confident on your travels. Visit at, or reach out the sales team online at
