"Our 'retirement' communities defy the traditional stereotypes of what it means to be 'retired,'" says Berwick Comox's Community Relations Manager, Jolene Shaw.
In fact, with more time to do what they want to do, Berwick's busy residents are always on the go, whether they're volunteering at local historical sites such as The Filberg Heritage Lodge & Park, attending social events, or exploring both locally and farther afield on planned group outings and vacations!
"Many of our residents enjoy giving back to their community. They're always looking for new ways to work with local charities and organizations," Shaw says. "One of our residents, Phyllis Long, was recently recognized as an Honorary Life Member at the Filberg Heritage Lodge & Park, receiving a commemorative plaque on their wall of Honorary Life Members for her many years of dedication to supporting and promoting the park."
In 1967, Phyllis was an active member of a local writing group when they were contacted by the local government to work on a historical book about the Comox Valley. Phyllis was asked to work on a segment about the Filberg family and worked closely with Mr. Filberg. Ever since, she's remained a passionate supporter of the lodge, volunteering in various positions throughout her life.
Berwick Comox is sponsoring the coming Filberg Festival, an annual arts and entertainment extravaganza in support of the local heritage site. Running Aug. 2 to 4, this will be Berwick's third year supporting the popular community event.
Many Berwick residents are excited to be helping out at the 'Celebration Station' at the entrance to the Filberg Festival, where they'll meet and greet guests, providing information and guidance as attendees head in to enjoy the live music, art, and natural beauty of the park.
