When Dr. Alexandra Bascom discovered the MonaLisa Touch laser treatment at a conference in 2019, it sparked a journey that may help redefine women’s health in the Comox Valley.
“I’m very much a person who needs to see that something works,” Dr. Bascom says of the innovative therapy that treats the symptoms of Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause, which can include vaginal dryness and discomfort. “The clinical results were undeniable. The treated vaginal tissue reverted to looking pre-menopausal, even under microscopic slides.”
Fast-forward to today, Dr. Bascom’s clinic,, is the only practice in the region offering the, complemented by an array of urologic and sexual health services. Located in Comox, the clinic serves Northern Vancouver Island and the Sunshine Coast, addressing the needs of its aging population.
“Women’s health men’s health for decades,” Dr. Bascom explains. “Men have access to medications like Viagra, but women have often been left with few solutions. My goal is to change that.”
Bascom Medical Therapy i with personalized care, empowering women to take control of their health, by managing menopause symptoms, addressing incontinence or improving sexual function.
“For many, it’s the first step in reclaiming their comfort and confidence.”
Bridging a gap in care
With Comox Valley’s average age nearing 60, the demand for specialized care is clear. Dr. Bascom’s unique qualifications as a urologist allow her to address a wide range of issues from bladder dysfunction to pelvic organ prolapse.
“Being able to provide holistic care for vaginal and bladder symptoms is a game-changer,” she says. “Patients often tell me, they never knew their symptoms could be caused by menopause.”
Many women also struggle with misinformation or silence around menopause and sexual health.
“There’s a generational shift happening,” Dr. Bascom adds. “Baby Boomers often accept discomfort as a fact of life. Generation X is questioning that, and millennials won’t tolerate it. They want answers, and we’re here to provide them.”
“My work is about empowering patients to feel in control of their aging process,” she says. “When someone realizes they don’t have to live with pain or discomfort, it’s life-changing.
“Our patients leave happier and healthier, with a renewed sense of confidence – that’s what makes this work so fulfilling.”
