Architect Tom Moore has designed many buildings around Vancouver Island and farther afield, but in east Courtenay is a labour of love.
“I grew up in the Comox Valley, and this is a family project. Dark Horse Holdings has had the property for a number of years, but it took us a while to find the right fit for Courtenay.”
is an inventive, eco-friendly building with a mix of residential and commercial units. Its immediately adjacent to the Comox Valley Hospital makes it ideal for medical specialists and other commercial renters. Residents will love the short drive to Costco, Home Depot and Crown Isle Resort, plus the walking path for easy access to Comox Valley Aquatic Centre and North Island College.
Sustainable, healthy building ideas
- Air Quality: Old apartment buildings often have musty wall-to-wall carpet that’s hard to clean and attracts dust. That’s why Moore chose polished concrete for Cubes — it’s easy to keep clean, and that means improved air quality throughout the building.
- Sustainability: Moore used Heat Recovery Ventilation in Cubes, which reduces the building’s energy consumption while keeping air fresh. “It was really important to me to find ways to reduce our environmental impact while keeping residents comfortable. The Heat Recovery system uses the heat in outgoing air to warm incoming fresh air, so room temperature stays stable without high energy consumption or heating bills,” he says. Even the dryer (included in each suite along with a washer, dishwasher, and other appliances) uses energy-efficient heat pump technology. Cubes committed to sustainability through construction as well, using local materials like mass timber and concrete.
- Natural Living: Walk inside the Cubes show suite and you’ll notice the best of the outside world comes with you. “We’ve installed natural wood ceilings that look so stunning when you walk into the space,” Moore says. Both the bedroom and living room of the show suite boast floor-to-ceiling windows, and another row of windows stretches all the way to the kitchen sink. “The light just pours in. And window coverings are included with all residential suites so you can easily adjust the light throughout the day.”
The show suite is now open for viewing with Phase 1 occupancy in August, and Phase 2 slated for September. Register now at for exclusive offers and VIP access. Check out the latest developments at ., right next to the Comox Valley Hospital. Take a virtual tour of the show suite .
