Racing action Saturday at Saratoga Speedway was highlighted by a night full of aggressive racing with the IMCA Modifieds, Bombers and Dwarf cars. The action featured lots of incidents of trading paint and bent metal which eliminated three cars, along with two for motor problems and one for a blown transmission. In the Modified heat, Jamie Fleming and Chris Beaulieu tangled sending Fleming hard backwards into the tires, damaging his car.

This Saturday, playoff lacrosse makes its return to Strathcona Gardens in Campbell River. Gates open to the Rob Brind’Amour Arena at 5 p.m. The Ravens host the Saanich Tigers in game one of a three-game semi-final series. The winner goes on to compete for the Island Championship.

Undefeated Bukwas wins second belt

Chris “Bukwas” Anderson bumped his record to 6-0 by defeating Jared Revel of Langley June 24 at a mixed martial arts event in Coquitlam. By doing so, the Courtenay fighter won the Battlefield Fight League (BFL) middleweight title. Because he also holds the welterweight belt, Bukwas becomes the first BFL fighter to hold two titles simultaneously in different weights.

Boat race, rollovers highlight Canada Day car racing

One of the most entertaining Crash to Pass boat races and two rollovers highlighted Canada Day racing action in front of the biggest crowd of the season, Saturday at Saratoga Speedway. After heat races and main events for the Hornets, Mad Max, Crash to Pass and Road Runners, 12 cars and trucks took to the track for 20 laps to see who would have the largest piece of their boat — hooked up to the back of their cars/trucks — left as they set out to destroy each other’s vessel.
