The United Way’s Improving Lives Locally campaign has kicked off in the Comox Valley. The locally-focused campaign began at a Sept. 18 launch breakfast and will run until Christmas.
The Improving Lives Locally campaign seeks to raise money for programs that enrich peoples’ lives. The United Way is funding 18 programs in the Comox Valley.
Some of the programs being funded in the Valley include a volunteer support program that offers counseling and weekly visits to people who feel isolated, a mentorship program for disadvantaged youth, a caregiver support program, and a drop-in program that delivers literacy resources and assistance to homeless people.
“The idea with all the campaigns in each region is that the money raised stays in that region,” said Lindsay McGinn, an impact officer with the United Way’s Central and Northern Vancouver Island division.
“The programs we fund could always use more money — the needs are increasing and wait lists are increasing.”
Coinciding with the campaign is the United Way’s expanded BC211 help service on Vancouver Island. Much like dialing 3-1-1, this number directs and connects British Columbians with community, social, government, and non-clinical programs and services.
BC211, which launched last spring, now has confidential telephone, texting and online referral options available to Vancouver Island residents 24/7.
