Executive director, Mark Herringer, has received the Award for International Education Distinguished Leadership from the British Columbia Council for International Education.

Herringer was honoured in Vancouver B.C. on June 25 at a ceremony held during the B.C. International Education Week. 

Herringer has been responsible for the development and implementation of North Island College鈥檚 (NIC) indigenizing internationalization plan, Journeying Together, and global engagement initiatives.

鈥淭his award is recognition of the privilege I have had over the years to work with teams and colleagues who have helped me to understand how to do international education differently,鈥� said Herringer in a press release. 鈥淭he greatest encouragement to risk creating change has come from our exceptional team at the Office of Global Engagement and the incredible Elders, faculty and management group at the Office of Indigenous Education at NIC.鈥�

The Journeying Together is NIC鈥檚 first Indigenous-serving internationalization plan which places Indigenous students, employees and their communities at the centre to shape and guide NIC鈥檚 work in the future. The aim is to engage international students and introduce them to Indigenous knowledge.

Within Journeying Together, Herringer is responsible for internationalization at home, education abroad, international recruitment and student support, and international projects and partnerships. 

Along with Herringer鈥檚 Award for International Education Distinguished Leadership, other categories included Rising Star in International Education, Excellence in International Education Marketing and Outstanding Program in International Education. A peer committee determines the award winners.
