A house on Denman Island caught fire early Saturday morning on North Central Road.

A home on Denman Island was saved thanks to the quick action of the homeowner during the early hours of Saturday morning.

Denman Island fire chief Don Luckett said the department responded to a fire at a home on North Central Road around 3:19 a.m.

“The owner had knocked it down - it started on the upper level - he probably saved the house. In another 10 minutes he probably would have lost the house.”

There were three occupants in the home at the time, added Luckett, who were all examined by BC Ambulance Service on scene and released.

He explained the fire started on the upper floor of the home, and believes the fire may have started by a lamp.

Over the past month, Luckett said calls to the station have been up, and August is “looking that way too. A lot of people are on edge with the smoke and we’ve had some medical calls as a result of that.

“Every time people hear sirens - especially early in the morning - they get nervous.”
