As of Dec. 3, the sea star leads the poll in this year's Salish Sea Idol fundraiser.

They might not sing, but a Sidney aquarium is ready to crown its next marine star with the launch of the 2024 Salish Sea Idol contest, a fundraising campaign running until Dec. 20.

This year’s contenders, selected by the Shaw Centre for the Salish Sea, include the bald eagle, humpback whale, salmon, and sea star. Supporters can vote for their favourite by donating to support the centre’s educational and conservation initiatives.

The campaign aims to raise $15,000, with donations matched up to $10,000 thanks to a gift from Lynda and Murray Farmer. The total could reach $25,000.

Last year’s winner, the giant Pacific octopus, drew spirited support. Board president Allan Lane hopes for similar enthusiasm this year.

People can donate online or in person, share the campaign with friends, and follow updates on social media, to help the campaign sore
