People in the Forbidden Plateau area now have access to high-speed internet.

The new connection is part of a provincial program, administered in the north-Island region by the Northern Development Initiative Trust.

Comox Valley Regional District board chair Will Cole-Hamilton said in a news release Wednesday (July 10) that it’s important for the residents in Forbidden Plateau to get this much-needed upgrade.

"Investing in reliable, high-speed broadband internet access within the Forbidden Plateau area will ensure residents remain connected and supported. This commitment by the Province and partners demonstrates dedication for building stronger local communities."

The B.C. government funded $2.6 million, and was matched by Telus. Roughly $37,500 was funded by the Regional District of Mount Waddington.

Other communities set to receive high-speed internet access include Quatsino Subdivision 18 of the Quatsino First Nation, Coal Harbour, Sproat Lake and Ross Road and the Island Highway in Nanoose Bay.
