Candidates forum for Courtenay-Comox riding next week

The first all-candidates forum for the Courtenay-Comox riding of the May 9 election will be held in Comox on March 22.

This meeting will be the first for the new Courtenay-Comox Electoral District

which takes in Courtenay, Comox, and the area north to the Oyster River. (Voters in Cumberland, Royston, Denman and Horn- by Island and Union Bay will be part of the Mid-Island-Pacific Rim Electoral District.) Residents are encouraged to check their voting cards and to visit the Elections BC website for further information.

A map of the Courtenay-Comox Electoral District can be found online at: http://

bit.ly/2lLR6Kf Hosted by the Outreach Committee of Comox United Church, this non-partisan event will be an opportunity for electors to hear the currently declared candidates give their person- al and party platforms. The format will see questions put to each candidate – other candidates can then exercise a limited number of opportunities to rebut their opponents.

Unlike “television debates” that often see candidates speaking over each other and interrupting, this meeting will allow each candidate a timed opportunity to speak uninterrupted and clearly.

The goal is for the public to hear each candidate’s position and make their feelings known at the ballot box.

The public is invited to attend – there is no charge, and the moderator is being asked to ensure that there are no outbursts from the audience and that the candidate are afforded a fair opportunity to speak.

You are asked not to bring candidate signs, banners, or handouts and to be respectful of all the candidates.

Questions will not be taken from the floor, but if you have questions you wish have considered, forward them to comoxunitedchurch@gmail.com

We will attempt to provide the candidates with questions of particular interest to the local area, as well as British Columbia as a whole.

Please join us in this opportunity to meet the candidates and lis- ten to their positions and concerns about issues in our province and our community.

The March 22 all candidates forum is at Comox United Church, 250 Beach Dr., Comox, 7 p.m. start.
