It was quite the wake-up call Tuesday morning for Comox resident Darrell Joan Tomkins, who awoke to a black bear taking a stroll across his property facing Marina Park in Comox around 6:30 a.m.

Tomkins explained he was able to see the bear from his living room window, but added it would have been quite the surprise if he had encountered the animal outside.

There have been a variety of bear encounters both in the Comox Valley and Campbell River, and the sighting serves as reminder to residents to be diligent about proper garbage disposal and to keep a distance from wildlife.
