As we endure rainy and often frosty winters, the idea of having winter-ready backyard vegetables seems farfetched.
However, since the early ’80s, Carol McIntyre has been learning what works for growing leafy and root vegetables organically so that they are available in winter.
This seems even more unlikely when one finds that she doesn’t have a greenhouse, let alone a heated one. All the growing is done in 20 raised garden beds.
In recent years, she has been offering a four-part intensive course instructing others about growing a broad variety of such foods. McIntyre’s course concentrates on soil health, mulching, crop rotations, specific varieties, ideal timing of plantings, and winter protection and harvest.
She has also produced an illustrated teaching calendar, available in local retail outlets, giving many hints on all these topics.
On Jan. 27, McIntyre will give an introductory talk about winter-ready vegetables, including preparations for saving seed from winter-harvest vegetables.
The presentation begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Rotary Room of the Florence Filberg Centre (lower entrance).
