Dear editor,
Mayor Jangula and Courtenay city council (with the exception of Doug Hillian) didn’t even come close to “clearing the air” as promised in regards to concerns about the Courtenay Airpark.
They skirted around the issue and did not voice for the record their unequivocal support for our local airpark, its businesses, its 50 direct and 90 indirect jobs, and its major importance to our entire community.
The mayor accused members of the public of “spreading misinformation” on social media yet we see long-term business leases shortened to monthly leases, a 21st Street-to-Comox estuary bridge proposal, ‘red tape’ that has stalled the float plane ramp reconstruction, and most importantly no denials of plans for commercial building expansion or re-development of the airpark land (for condo use?)
It seems to be a co-ordinated scheme of small steps (death by a thousand cuts?) aimed at squeezing the airpark out of existence.
The public needs to be aware of the real threat of removing our much-loved and well-utilized airpark and its associated wheelchair-accessible green space.
The mayor and council need to deal with city staff, go on record and really “clear the air” by putting into writing their support and promise of a long-term future and protection for our airpark before the next election.
