Dear editor,

I regularly drive on Highway 19A between Fanny Bay and Courtenay.

I drive this route all year round at different times of the day. Without exaggeration, I encounter at least two (and often many more) cyclists riding along who have no visibility every single time I’m out: cyclists who are wearing all black, dark blue, green; all colours that do not make them visible to drivers.

Keep in mind this is a fairly treed route and when the bikes are riding on the shoulder, depending on the direction and time of day/year, I cannot see you until I am on top of you. The trees create shadows and if you are not wearing a visi-vest or bright-coloured clothing, you blend right into the surroundings.

I have started pulling over ahead of the cyclists, flagging them down and telling them. People are constantly amazed I can’t see them, they usually appreciate that I made the effort to inform them, the odd one rides away thinking I’m the idiot. A guy I talked to last week said, "Oh, I usually wear one but it's in my other pack.”

Well, a whole lot of good that’s going to do when you’re laying on the shoulder dead and I have to be a first responder.

I do not want to be responsible for you not making it home safely. But if I can’t see you, you are putting yourself at risk.

Cyclists, please do better. If we have to share the road, at least give me a chance to see you.
