Letter: Lack of crosswalk frustrates pedestrian

Dear editor,

Unbelievably surprised!

I was walking with grandchildren and heading to shop Walmart/Winners and realized there is no pedestrian crosswalk! Only a bike lane across the road?

Drivers did exactly what they should do - drove along as we stood there, with no bikes around. We waved and of course, a driver realized we were after crossing safely to the other side of the road and they stopped right away (thank you).

This bike-only crosswalk is on top of Kilpatrick Street (by the building that houses CV Kids Playhouse). It appears as though we are encouraging bike use over foot use even though new builds that are happening at lightning pace are near amenities so walking should be an efficient, safe alternative to driving or biking. All of this makes me wonder if there are other areas in Courtenay where pedestrian walkways are now bike path crossings?

Walkers - speak out for our safety.

Elaine Weippert
