Letter to the editor

Dear Editor:

Looking at the numbers quoted in the Oct. 23 Record for the election results, Brennan Day of the Conservative Party got 13,146 votes-the largest number and therefore he becomes the MLA for our district.

But when you add up the votes that went to the NDP, the Greens and the two Independents, they add up to 20,527 votes. So the majority of the voters of the Comox Valley did not vote for and did not want a Conservative MLA. But with our voting system, the majority of us and what we wanted doesn't matter. Isn't it time that we demand a change in our voting system to proportional representation where everyone's vote counts.

Brennan Day is quoted as saying "I'm going to be a strong advocate for the Comox Valley in Victoria and make sure we're representing everybody."

I for one wonder how he will really do that when MLA's in whip parties (all except the Green Party) tend to vote the party line, and I, like the majority of people who did not vote Conservative, aren't very happy with their party line.

So again, let's get a change in our voting system.
