Ferry connections mystifying, frustrating

Dear editor,

Dear editor,

On a recent Friday morning my partner arrived early for the 10 a.m. ferry from Little River to Powell River. He did so because his attempt to book the ferry earlier in the week was denied as reservations were not available. When that ferry left there were four cars in the lineup for advanced bookings.

As he was heading to Sechelt he wasted no time in getting down the coast to Saltery Bay only to miss the 11:20 ferry by about 25 minutes. Then he waited four hours until the next ferry left at 3:50. All told it took him almost eight hours to get from Cumberland to Sechelt. Thanks BC Ferries.

After consulting with the ferry schedule again for the homeward journey, we decided to forgo the morning of hiking and exploring that our hosts had planned for us and head for the 8:25 ferry heading north. This got us to Powell River in plenty of time for a leisurely breakfast out before the 11:50 ferry to Little River. If we had gone for a morning hike and taken the 12:20 ferry from Earl’s Cove, we would have had to wait until 5:15 for the next ferry to Little River. If we had waited until the 4:55 ferry our only remaining option home leaves at 8:45.

The person responsible for making up this schedule needs to have their head examined. There is no obvious reason why the Little River and Powell River departure times cannot accommodate better connections.
