According to a recent Statistics Canada survey, Campbell River residents have the highest level of life satisfaction in British Columbia.
The gateway city to northern Vancouver Island smiled its way to the title of the happiest city in B.C., with a life-satisfaction rating of 61.34 per cent. Every other B.C. community had a rating below 50.
Out of all the districts surveyed on the Island, the Salmon Capital of the World reported the most positive outlook and a strong sense of purpose.
The federal statistics agency also scored North Cowichan, Nanaimo, Courtenay, Oak Bay, Victoria, Langford, Colwood and Saanich based on several key factors, including overall life satisfaction, sense of meaning and purpose, hopeful outlook, loneliness, community belonging and social support.
Oak Bay residents reported a six on a 10-point satisfaction scale (60.24 per cent), indicating overall satisfaction with their lives. When asked, "To what extent do you feel the things you do in your life are worthwhile?" 64 per cent reported having a good sense of purpose.
Victoria, Colwood, Saanich and Langford fell in the range of 44 per cent to 49 per cent high life-satisfaction rates.
When it comes to always having someone to count on, one district dominated – Saanich residents gave themselves almost eight out of 10. Seventy-eight per cent say they often have people they can depend on when they really need it. The district also ranked second to Oak Bay when it comes to having a strong sense of meaning and purpose.
Almost 44 per cent of Victoria residents said they often feel lonely, making them the most lonely of the five Greater Victoria districts surveyed, according to StatsCan.
65 per cent of Langford residents say they have a hopeful view of the future, but they also have the lowest sense of belonging in the community, rating themselves 3 on a 10-point scale.
The quality of life ranking released at the end of January is based on from cities across all 10 provinces, painting a picture of Canadians' overall well-being.
