Pair of south Island high schools snare provincial basketball glory

Pacific Christian School and St. Michaels University triumphed at the senior girls' B.C. high school championships

It was a weekend of triumph for two Greater Victoria high schools as they returned from Langley with provincial senior girls basketball championship trophies.

Saanich's Pacific Christian School and St. Michaels University School took home titles in the single-A and double-A divisions.

For the Pacific Christian Pacers, it was their first girls' championship title since their back-to-back wins in 2000 and 2001. The Pacers defeated Sir Alexander Mackenzie 70-63 to clinch the single-A title.

Kealayna Tupas-Singh cemented her tournament most valuable player honours with a dominating finals performance. She led the Pacers with 29 points, 10 rebounds, and eight assists. Alongside her, Eden Greene, who was also named championship player of the game, scored 12 points.

Greene and Anabel Martinez were recognized with all-star honours, with Greene named to the first team, and Martinez to the second team.

Meanwhile, the St. Mikes girls had their moment of glory in the AA girls' championship.

After back-to-back years of silver finishes, the Blue Jags reached the top by defeating the top-ranked Holy Cross Crusaders from Surrey 62-54.

Avery Geddes led the charge for the Blue Jags with a 22-point, seven-rebound, three-assist, and three-steal performance. Her efforts earned her both the championship player of the game and the most valuable player awards for the tournament.

Geddes' teammates, Charlie Anderson and Olivia Pickering, were also instrumental. Anderson contributed 16 points and nine rebounds, while Pickering finished with a double-double – 11 points, 12 rebounds, and adding four assists.

Anderson and Pickering were also named first-team all-stars.

Across the province, other teams were also fighting for the top spot. In the AAA championships, Abbotsford’s MEI Eagles narrowly defeated the Kamloops’ Sa-Hali Sabres 50-49.

In the AAAA championship, the Seaquam Seahawks edged out the Brookswood Bobcats 68-67. Oak Bay lost a nailbiter to Kelowna 65-64 to finish eighth.
