Investigators were going through the burnt-out wreckage of an explosion and fire in a Langley residential neighbourhood on Saturday, March 1.

One person has been confirmed dead in a Friday, Feb. 28 explosion and fire that rocked a Langley neighbourhood.

"I can confirm that a deceased person has been located inside the residence,’ said Sgt. Zynal Sharoom of the Langley RCMP.

"We are working with the B.C. Coroners service to identify the deceased individual.’”

A statement issued by Sharoom said preliminary examination of the scene has investigators focused on the cause of the explosion and fire "which may be consistent with what is found at an illegal drug extraction lab."

"However, it may take time to reach a definitive conclusion, as a thorough investigation and expert analysis are required."

Investigators have remained on-site to examine the scene," Sharoom said.

Emergency crews were called to the 7300-block of 196 St. around 10:40 a.m. after Langley RCMP received a report of a possible explosion and fire.

A witness told the Langley Advance Times one of two injured men at the scene was "was crying that his mom was still in there."

Residents of the area said the immediate area was shaken by an explosion, and a fast-spreading fire that fully engulfed the house in a matter of minutes and damaged neighbouring homes as well.

Anyone with information about the incident who has not yet spoken with authorities is asked to contact the Langley RCMP and quote file 2025-6044.
