Damage to election signs ramping up across the Valley

It’s happening throughout the Valley - on both personal property and public boulevards - and it has gotten so bad the resulting damage is becoming a public hazard.

Broken and damaged election signs are popping up in Courtenay and Comox, and the damage is both frustrating and dangerous for the public.

“I was in disbelief as to the senseless act of vandalism,” said Comox constituent Wayne Della Siega, whose election sign was spray-painted with ‘Trump’ in black lettering.

“The ignorance of someone to equate a USA politician with a provincial election party representative is beyond me.”

Late last week, a row of elections signs near Guthrie Road near the Courtenay/Comox border were flattened with wood pieces and screws strewn across the road.

Another sign was also spray-painted with ‘Trump’ across the front.

Della Siega added he has seen signs kicked down previously, but had never seen “this type of targeted message.”

“I would like to believe that people of the Valley are allowed and welcomed to express their opinions on topics without the fear of reprisal.”

Const. Rob Gardner of the Comox Valley RCMP said police are aware of the damage to election signs, and are continuing to investigate. He is asking anyone with information to contact RCMP at 250-338-1321.
