Comox Mayor Paul Ives presents John Marinus with his Freedom of the Municipality certificate.

Council of the Town of Comox conferred the Freedom of the Municipality to Mr. John Marinus, the highest honour that a municipality may bestow upon a person. The ceremony took place at a Special Meeting of Council held Monday, Aug. 7, 2017 with members of John’s family and friends present.

The tradition of granting the Freedom of the City, or in this case, Freedom of the Town, to an individual or military unit dates back more than three centuries. The decision to grant this symbolic freedom rests with the Council of the day.

“We pay John Marinus this highest honour to show him our sincere appreciation for his fine efforts in the many activities and achievements in our community,” said Mayor Paul Ives. “It is not given lightly and, in fact, it is only the eighth time that this honour has been bestowed by the Town of Comox since its incorporation 71 years ago.”

John Marinus served as a member of Town council from 1993 – 2008. He also served this community as a member of the Comox Volunteer Fire Department for 37 years.
